Rob Sanders Architects is best known for sensitive, responsive designs which engage both architectural and natural context. By carefully listening to client needs and dreams, drawing on experience and a well-honed sense of appropriate scale, the firm creates stylish, elegant spaces which meet - and exceed – expectations. RSA specializes in preserving, restoring, and adapting 18th, 19th, and 20th century buildings for discerning clients. Renovations, additions, new houses, and vacation homes are all treated with the same thoughtful approach. RSA also has extensive experience with adaptive reuse of older structures as updated business locations, preserving architectural character and history while accommodating 21st century needs.
William Morris said “Have nothing in your home that you do not know to be useful, or belief to be beautiful.” In that spirit, RSA believes that your living spaces should be infused with the beauty that comes from correct proportions, scale, materials, and the quality of light. In this context, bigger is not always better. Your lifestyle is uplifted by surroundings that make you feel deliciously comfortable and “just right”.
Beyond fine design, hallmarks of RSA projects are respect for the site and the desire to conserve resources. Designs are environmentally responsive: sensitive to the sun moving around a property and its impact on day lighting and passive heating; the direction of prevailing winds; adjacency to wetlands, important trees and other landscape features. The firm is experienced and stays abreast of the evolving technologies which provide improved insulation, windows, glass, ventilation, heating and cooling systems (including geothermal heat pumps), roof materials, and sources of power.
The firm is honored to have established long term relationships with numerous clients, who return to RSA with additional design projects, or who refer us to their family, friends, and colleagues.
In 2005 the Connecticut Trust for Historic Preservation recognized Rob Sanders adaptive reuse design for Trackside at Dana House, Wilton’s Teen Center, with an award for “The Built Environment”. His work has been published in This Old House, Renovation Style, New York Magazine and other national and local publications, and in the book “Suburban Renewal” by Tom Connor (Viking Studio, 2000).
Rob Sanders projects are located in Connecticut, New York, Massachusetts, and Maine. The six person firm is located in a renovated Victorian barn in Wilton, CT.

Rob Sanders has partnered with other nationally known architectural firms to provide design and project management for significant buildings. With Mark Rios, principal of Rios Clementi Hale Studios of Los Angeles, he collaborated on a contemporary guest house with a film screening room in Pound Ridge, NY (interior design by Vincente Wolf), and a 7,000 square foot weekend home with outbuildings in Litchfield County (interior design by Michael E. Smith.) In an adaptive reuse project with architect Charles Hagenah of Boston, he converted and expanded an historic inn and property in Wilton into corporate offices.
